Education:

In 1999, Mr. Schrag joined his father Tom Schrag and James Baum at Schrag & Baum, P.C, where he spent the majority of his time working on two major complex cases:

Currency Conversion Litigation: Mr. Schrag was part of the trial team in Schwartz v. Visa, et al. (Alameda County Case No. 822402-4), a UCL action against Visa and MasterCard for failing to disclose a currency conversion fee charged to cardholders who used credit cards in foreign countries. Mr. Schrag also prosecuted a parallel class action on behalf of debit cardholders (Shrieve v. Visa USA, Inc., et al., Alameda County Case No. RG04155097) and an antitrust class action alleging a conspiracy to fix the price of currency conversion fees against Visa, MasterCard, Bank of America, Citibank, Chase and other banks (In Re Currency Conversion Fee Litigation, MDL No. 1409). After a six month trial in Schwartz, the trial court entered judgment in Plaintiff’s favor and ordered Visa and MasterCard to refund illegally obtained currency conversion fees. While Schwartz was pending in the California Supreme Court, a $336 million settlement agreement was reached to resolve all currency conversion fee actions. This settlement received preliminary approval from the federal court in MDL No. 1409 and a final approval hearing was held on March 31, 2008.

Sulzer Orthopedics Litigation: Mr. Schrag represented 25 plaintiffs in a nationwide products liability action against Sulzer Orthopedics, a company that manufactured defective hip and knee implants (In Re Sulzer Hip Prosthesis and Knee Prosthesis Liability Litigation, MDL No. 1410). Schrag & Baum was appointed Co-Lead Plaintiff’s Counsel in the California coordinated actions (In re Hip Replacement Cases, JCCP 4165). MDL No. 1410 settled for over one billion dollars and Mr. Schrag’s clients received settlements of approximately $10 million.

Since forming Meade & Schrag LLP in 2006, Mr. Meade and Mr. Schrag have continued to focus on complex consumer and antitrust class actions and serious personal injury and employment litigation.
